Mr. Bernhardt has been involved with Centennial since 1989 when the Sedgwick County Board of Commissioners appointed him to Centennial's Board. He served as President through two turbulent years (1995-1996) as Centennial struggled to overcome the effects of years of under-funding and meet the challenges of Medicaid capitation. Mr. Bernhardt left the Board when his term as County Commissioner ended in January, 1998. In early 1999, he was asked to again serve the residents of Sedgwick County on Centennial's Board, this time as the community representative. Mr. Bernhardt served two terms as Vice President before being tapped once again to lead the Board in February, 2003.

Mr. Bernhardt owned and operated Pioneer Auto Parts and Supply in Julesburg for many years. Long active in community and civic activities, Mr. Bernhardt is Mayor Pro-Tem of the Town of Julesburg. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Sedgwick County Health Center, and the Board of Trustees of the Northeastern Colorado Revolving Loan Fund. He has chaired the Sedgwick County Economic Development Committee and the Sedgwick County Republican Party. In addition to serving on various boards of his church, he is active in the Lions and Elks clubs.

When not busy with civic affairs, Mr. Bernhardt enjoys his grandchildren.
